Marine Futures is working off the West Australian coast between Kalbarri and Eucla, in an area of approximately 60,000 square kilometres. As the project will map just 1000 square kilometres, one of the first steps' for the team was to "narrow the field" down to specific sites.

The team held a site selection workshop, inviting key marine resource users and managers from all over the state. The Workshop Outcomes Report outlines the process for the day and group responses in detail. However, in summary, there were four sites identified as clear priorities on the west coast and three on the south coast:

• Abrolhos Islands
• Jurien Bay
• Rottnest Island 
• Cape Naturaliste/ Geographe Bay
• Broke
• Mt Gardner
• Point Ann
• Middle Island
